California Zephyr

The California Zephyr is one of Amtrak’s most scenic and legendary long-distance train routes, traveling from Chicago to Emeryville, California, just outside San Francisco. Covering over 2,400 miles, the journey takes passengers through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the United States, including the majestic Rocky Mountains, the vast plains of Nebraska, the stunning canyons of Colorado, and the rugged Sierra Nevada. Often called “America’s most beautiful train ride,” the California Zephyr offers travelers a chance to experience panoramic views from its signature sightseer lounge cars, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows perfect for watching dramatic sunsets, winding rivers, and snow-capped peaks. Originally launched in 1949 by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Denver & Rio Grande Western, and Western Pacific railroads, the Zephyr has a storied past that includes luxury travel in the golden age of rail. Today, Amtrak continues to operate the route, providing a unique and relaxing way to cross the country while enjoying some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in North America.
